Padded Rice Stitch - Diagram 3
Padded Rice Stitch (Diagram 1):
This stitch is the same as the regular rice stitch, except that the regular rice stitch is worked over three horizontal stitches. These horizontal stitches are called "padding stitches". These padding stitches are worked first. Bring the needle up at A, move to the right over four canvas threads and bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move to the right over four canvas threads and bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move to the right over four canvas threads and bring the needle down at F. Normally, if we were working an entire row of these stitches, we would continue working the padding stitches. Only when the padding stitches are complete, do we work the regular rice stitches on top of them. For this demonstration, however, we will work only one and continue on to Diagram 2...
Padded Rice Stitch (Diagram 2):
We will now begin working the rice stitch OVER the padding stitches. In order to see the diagram clearly, the padding stitches are illustrated in dark blue. Bring the needle up at I, move up and to the left over four canvas intersections, bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at G, move up and to the right over four canvas intersections, bring the needle down at H. Now, continue on to Diagram 3...
Padded Rice Stitch (Diagram 3):
Beginning where we left off at H, bring the needle up at L, move down and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at M, move up and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at N.  Bring the needle up at K, move down and to the right over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at M. Bring the needle up at L, move down and to the left over two canvas intersections, bring the needle down at K. This completes the padded rice stitch.
