FISHBONE STITCH
The Fishbone Stitch creates a wavy pattern. This stitch is worked vertically - first down the canvas and then up the canvas. Each stitch consists of one long diagonal stitch crossed
Fishbone Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move up 3 canvas threads and over to the right 2 canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up 1 canvas thread and over to the left 1 canvas thread, bring the needle down at D. This completes the first Fishbone Stitch. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Fishbone Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at D, bring the needle up at E, move up 3 canvas threads and over to the right 2 canvas threads, bring the needle down at C. Bring the needle up at F, move up 1 canvas thread and over to the left 1 canvas thread, bring the needle down at G. Bring the needle up at H, move up 3 canvas threads and over to the right 2 canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at I, move up 1 canvas thread and over to the left 1 canvas thread, bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at K, move up 3 canvas threads and over to the right 2 canvas threads, bring the needle down at I. Bring the needle up at L, move up 1 canvas thread and over to the left 1 canvas thread, bring the needle down at M. This completes the first row. Now, continue on to Diagram 3...
Fishbone Stitch (Diagram 3):
For the second row, we begin at the bottom and work up the canvas. Bring the needle up at A, move down 3 canvas threads and over to the right 2 canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move down 1 canvas thread and over to the left 1 canvas thread, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move down 3 canvas threads and over to the right 2 canvas threads, bring the needle down at C. Bring the needle up G, move down 1 canvas thread and over to the left 1 canvas thread,

DIAGONAL FISHBONE STITCH
 
by one short diagonal stitch. We have also demonstrated the diagonal fishbone stitch, which differs in that it is worked using horizontal and vertical straight stitches, instead of  diagonal stitches. Three diagrams have been used to demonstrate each of these stitches. Diagonal Fishbone Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at H, move to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at I. Bring the needle up at J, move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Diagonal Fishbone Stitch (Diagram 2):
We will now begin the second part of this stitch. Bring the needle up at K,  move up over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at L, move to the left over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at M, move up over three canvas threads, bring the needle down at A. Bring the needle up at N, move to the left over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at O, move up over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at Q, move to the left over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at A. Now, continue on to Diagram 3...
Diagonal Fishbone Stitch (Diagram 3):
This diagram illustrates how this stitch should look when complete. This is actually two rows of the diagonal fishbone stitch. Row one consists of a vertical and horizonal row. Row two consists of another vertical and horizontal row. Like the regular fishbone stitch, the diagonal fishbone stitch creates an exciting pattern.

bring the needle down at F. Continue in this manner until the row is complete. As you can see from the diagram, the new row is worked into the previous row.
