The Crossed Flat Stitch was originally an embroidery stitch. In recent years, it has also been used for canvas work. The
crossed flat stitch looks nothing like the Flat Stitch - which is more of a diagonal pattern stitch. The crossed flat stitch creates an interesting "leaf" look, similar to the leaf stitches. This stitch should be worked vertically. It may be resized to accomodate the piece you are working on. Three diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch. Clicking on the PRINTABLE VERSION icon, located at the end of the series of diagrams, will direct you to the page to print these instructions.
Crossed Flat Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move down over one canvas thread and to the right over three canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move down over one canvas thread and to the left over three canvas threads, bring the needle down at D. Now continue on to Diagram 2...
Crossed Flat Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at D, bring the needle up at E, move down over one canvas thread and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move down over one canvas thread and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at H. As you can see from the diagram this part of the flat stitch is slightly
Crossed Flat Stitch (Diagram 3):
Beginning where we left off at H, bring the needle up at I, move down over one canvas thread and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at K, move down over one canvas thread and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, move down over one canvas thread and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at O, move down over one canvas thread and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at Q, move down over one canvas thread and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at R. Bring
longer than the first part. Now continue on to Diagram 3...
the needle up at S, move down over one canvas thread and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at T. Bring the needle up at U, move down over one canvas thread and to the right over three canvas threads, bring the needle down at V. Bring the needle up at W, move down over one canvas thread and to the left over three canvas threads, bring the needle down at X. Again, this last part of the stitch, like the first part, is slightly smaller than the rest. This helps create the "leaf" effect.
