The Houndstooth Cross Stitch is created using a half cross stitch with two looped
stitches. This stitch will produce a 3-D effect if done correctly. Be sure to maintain a loose yarn tension. This will allow the yarn to completely cover the canvas. Two diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch. Clicking on the PRINTABLE VERSION icon, located at the end of the series of diagrams, will direct you to the page to print these instructions.

Houndstooth Cross Stitch (Diagram 1):
In order to make this diagram easier to follow, the half cross stitch is illustrated in dark blue and the looped stitches are illustrated in light blue. Bring the needle up at A, move up and to the right over three canvas intersections, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move OVER the A/B stitch, bring the needle around and UNDER the A/B stitch, bring the needle back down at C. Basically, we have just created a loop stitch around the A/B stitch. It is important for the needle/yarn to be looped around the stitch, NOT the canvas. For the second loop, bring the needle up at D, move OVER the A/B stitch, bring the needle around and UNDER the A/B stitch, bring the needle back down
Houndstooth Cross Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at D, we will now start the next houndstooth cross stitch. Bring the needle up at C, move up and to the right over three canvas intersections, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at F, move OVER the C/E stitch, bring the needle around and UNDER the C/E stitch, bring the needle back down at F. Bring the needle up at
at D. Again, the needle/yarn should be looped around the stitch, NOT the canvas. This completes the first houndstooth cross stitch. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
B, move OVER the C/E stitch, bring the needle around and UNDER the C/E stitch, bring the needle back down at B. Bring the needle up at G, move up and to the right over three canvas intersections, bring the needle down at C. Bring the needle up at H, move OVER the G/C stitch, bring the needle around and UNDER the G/C stitch, bring the needle back down at H. Bring the needle up at A, move OVER the G/C stitch, bring the needle around and UNDER the G/C stitch, bring the needle back down at A. Bring the needle up at H, move up and to the right over three canvas intersections, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at I, move OVER the H/F stitch, bring the needle around and UNDER the H/F stitch, bring the needle back down at I. Bring the needle up at C, move OVER the H/F stitch, bring the needle around and UNDER the H/F stitch, bring the needle back down at C. This completes the second row of houndstooth cross stitches. You may also choose to use the alternate method of turning the canvas upside down to work subsequent rows.
