LONG & SHORT STITCH
The Long and Short Stitch may be worked in any direction (horizontally,
vertically or diagonally). It is most commonly used in embroidery but will adapt to needlepoint canvas. This is an excellect stitch to use for shading areas. Basically, this stitch consists of rows of long and short stitches (hence the name) that are worked INTO the stitches of the previous rows. Three diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch.

Long and Short Stitch (Diagram 3):
This diagram illustrates how numberous rows of the long and short stitch should look when complete. As you can see, except for the adjusting stitches on the first and last rows of this stitch, all of the stitches should be the same length. This stitch may also be worked using diagonal stitches, instead of straight stitches.
