OBLIQUE STITCH
The Oblique Stitch is also known as the oblique slav stitch. The basic oblique stitch is always worked horizontally from left to right.
DIAGONAL OBLIQUE STITCH
REVERSE OBLIQUE STITCH
There is also a diagonal oblique stitch and a reverse oblique stitch. The diagonal oblique stitch is worked diagonally. The reverse oblique stitch is worked horizontally but may be worked in either direction. This stitch is identical to the basic oblique stitch except for the direction of the stitches, which are reversed (which, of course, is where the name comes from). Multiple diagrams have been used to demonstrate these stitches.

Oblique Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Now, continue on to Diagram 2..
Oblique Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at F, bring the needle up at G, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at J. This completes the first row. To start the second row, we begin at the left and work left to right, again. Bring the needle up at K, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at L, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at G. Bring the needle up at M, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at I. Bring the needle up at N, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at O. Bring the needle up at P, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at Q. To start the third row, we begin at the left and work left to right, again. Bring the needle up at R, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at M. Bring the needle up at S, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at N. Bring the needle up at T, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at U, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at V. This completes the regular oblique stitch. Filling stitches should be used where necessary. Now, continue on to Diagram 3...
Oblique Stitch (Diagram 3):
This diagram illustrates how the oblique stitch should look when worked with only one thread in between. This creates a fuller look. Filling stitches are shown here in dark blue. Click on the Printable Version icon, below, to print these diagrams and instructions.
Diagonal Oblique Stitch (Diagram 1):
This variation of the oblique stitch is worked from the bottom left to the top right. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Diagonal Oblique Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at F, bring the needle up at G, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at H, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at I. Bring the needle up at J, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at K. Bring the needle up at L, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at M, move up over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at N. This completes the diagonal oblique stitch. Be sure to use filling stitches where necessary. Click on the Printable Version icon, below, to print these diagrams and instructions.
Reverse Oblique Stitch (Diagram 1):
This variation of the oblique stitch is basically just a "mirror view" of the stitch. The stitches are worked at an opposite angle to the regular oblique stitch. Bring the needle up at A, move down over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move down over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move down over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move down over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, move down over two canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at J. The next row is worked from right to left. Bring the needle up at K, move up over two canvas threads and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at L, move up over two canvas threads and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at M, move up over two canvas threads and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at N, move up over two canvas threads and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at O. Bring the needle up at P, move up over two canvas threads and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at Q. And, finally, the last row is worked from left to right in the same manner as the first row. Click on the Printable Version icon, below, to print these diagrams and instructions.
