RHODES STITCH
The Rhodes Stitch gets it's name from it's creator, Mary Rhodes. It is an excellent decorative stitch. This stitch creates a "star " within a square appearance. The Rhodes
Rhodes Stitch (Diagram 1):
Bring the needle up at A, move up and to the right over six canvas intersections, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up over six canvas threads and to the right over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up over six canvas threads and to the right over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at H. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Rhodes Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at H, bring the needle up at I, move up over six canvas threads and to the left over two canvas threads, bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at K, move up over six canvas threads and to the left over four canvas threads, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, move to the right over six canvas intersections, bring the needle down at N. Now, continue on to Diagram 3...
Rhodes Stitch (Diagram 3):
Beginning where we left off at N, bring the needle up at O, move up over four canvas threads and to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at P. Bring the needle up at Q, move up over two canvas theads and to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at R. Bring the needle up S, move to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at T. Bring the needle up at U, move down over two canvas threads and to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at V. Bring the needle up at W, move down over four canvas threads and to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at X. This completes the first Rhodes Stitch. Now, continue on to Diagram 4...

Rhodes Stitch (Diagram 4):
Once the Rhodes Stitch is complete, add the tie-down stitch as shown in this diagram.
Rhodes Stitch (Diagram 5):
This diagram illustrates how the next Rhodes Stitch would be worked into the first Rhodes Stitch.
 
Stitch may be resized to almost any size you choose. When working this stitch with longer stitches, as in the diagrams below, you must add a tie-down stitch to the center. This will hold the long stitches in place and prevent snagging.  Shorter stitched pieces (4 canvas threads) will not require the extra tie-down stitch.
NOTE: We have chosen to illustrates this stitch using two different colors. This is for illustration purposes only - it will make the individual stitches that make up the Rhodes Stitch easier to understand. When working this stitch only one color yarn should be used.Five diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch.
