The Sprats Head Stitch was originally a stitch used by tailors. Eventually, it was
adapted for use with needlepoint canvas. This stitch may be resized to accomodate whatever project being worked. Just be sure to maintain the proper ratio. The sprats head stitch is an excellent choice for working backgrounds or large areas of canvas. Three diagrams have been used to demonstrate this stitch. Sprats Head Stitch (Diagram 1):
In order to make this diagram easier to follow, two colors have been used to demonstrate this stitch. Bring the needle up at A, move up over ten canvas threads and to the right over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up over ten canvas threads and to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at
Sprats Head Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off at G, bring the needle up at H, move up over eight canvas threads and to the right over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at I. Bring the needle up at J, move up over eight canvas threads and to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at K. Bring the needle up at L, move up over seven canvas threads and to the right over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at M. Bring the needle up at N, move up over seven canvas threads and to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at O. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Sprats Head Stitch (Diagram 3):
Beginning where we left off at O, bring the needle up at P, move up over six canvas threads and to the right over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at Q. Bring the needle up at R, move up over six canvas threads and to to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at S. Bring the needle up at T, move up over five canvas
B. Bring the needle up at D, move up over nine canvas threads and to the right over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at E. Bring the needle up at F, move up over nine canvas threads and to the left over six canvas threads, bring the needle down at G. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
