There are two types of wave stitches, the open wave stitch and the closed wave stitch. They are both decorative stitches and should not be used on their own. The
open wave stitch is worked on top of a trame stitch. For a more interesting effect, try using different colors for this stitch. The closed wave stitch is similar to knitting. Both of these wave stitches are looped stitches and not very durable. Multiple diagrams have been used to demonstrate each of these stitches. Clicking on the PRINTABLE VERSION icon, located at the end of the series of diagrams, will direct you to the page to print these instructions.

Closed Wave Stitch (Diagram 1):
We begin the closed wave stitch by working a row of small upright stitches. Bring the needle up at A, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at B. Bring the needle up at C, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at D. Bring the needle up at E, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at F. Bring the needle up at G, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at H. Bring the needle up at I, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at J. Bring the needle up at K, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at L. Bring the needle up at M, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at N. Bring the
Closed Wave Stitch (Diagram 2):
This is where the wave stitches are added. The wave stitches are illustrated in light blue. Bring the needle up at A, move the needle/yarn UNDER the upright stitch (but not under the canvas), bring the needle down and UNDER the canvas at B. Once the needle/yarn have moved under B, bring the needle up and continue up to C. Repeat this process until the end of the row. Now, continue on to Diagram 3...
Closed Wave Stitch (Diagram 3):
This diagram illustrates how the second row of closed wave stitches should be worked into the first row. This row would be worked in the opposite direction of the first row.
Open Wave Stitch (Diagram 1):
We begin this stitch by working the laid (trame') stitch. Bring the needle up at A, move to the right over any number of threads you choose and bring the needle down at B. The wave stitches are illustrated in light blue. Bring the needle up at C, move up and around the laid stitch as illustrated above. At E and G the yarn will be worked UNDER the canvas. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
Open Wave Stitch (Diagram 2):
Beginning where we left off, once the wave stitch is worked, small tie-down stitches need to be added to the first row. These are shown here at D and F. The second wave stitch will be worked into the frst wave stitch as shown in the above diagram.
needle up at O, move up over one canvas thread, bring the needle down at P. Now, continue on to Diagram 2...
